Within the priority program "Towards implantable lung" two new projects have been approved:

3DLung - Implantable artificial lung based on three-dimensional membranes

In our predecessor SPP project ”3D-printed membrane architectures for ECMO application”, we successfully fabricated porous 3D-membranes in the shape of a TPMS and proved their superiority over hollow fiber membranes.
Encouraged by this major milestone we now propose to develop the first truly implantable artificial lung.
This is a joint project with the DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials of the RWTH Aachen University and the Department of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Vascular Surgery of the Hannover Medical School.

RenOx - Combined lung and kidney support in a novel, highly integrated device for patient-specific lung replacement therapy

In the course of this project, a more sensible solution for simultaneous lung and kidney support will be developed in several steps.
This is a joint project with the Chair of Engineering Organ Support Technologies at the University of Twente and the Department of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Vascular Surgery of the Hannover Medical School.
