Translational and Technology Transfer Research
The pathway and speed with which a biomedical innovation arises from an idea or invention, are today seen as a multidimensional, iterative process. Of the many options to influence on this process, we are pursuing currently two different approaches:
Many actors are involved in the development process from basic research to the approval of the medical device, and beyond. At each stage it is crucial to have the “right“ partners, to get through the ideal combination of knowledge and experience as quickly as possible to the target.
So far however, finding the best suitable partner is often left to chance as is the case for example in regional innovation clusters. But a systematic approach for partner selection could be possible, as comprehensive data material exists in particular from scientists due to their high publication activity. This enables the assessment of the researcher’s professional expertise as a basis for future collaboration.
Because of its enormous volume of several million publication records only an at least partially automated procedure will be able to decipher, classify and weight this material, in order to derive finally valid recommendations for biomedical cooperation partners.

Systematic Technology Review
Unlike the still dominating method of technology-driven innovation development, the demand-pul-approach sets in the clinical routine. The key question is then: what technologies have the potential to meet a certain clinical challenge of diagnosis or therapy? This could include, for example, the measurement of diagnostic parameters or the separation properties of a reusable operation instrument, to cite only two cases from many possible.
Now the task is to extract the available knowledge of possible technological solutions. Scientific and technological publications of all kinds go through an IT based screening procedure that concludes with a sort of results by relevance, so that only most important texts must indeed be read and condensed into project ideas.

Analysis of Innovation und Technology
Medical technology has cross-cutting nature. It is extremely broad, receives impulses from various technological/ scientific disciplines. It can address nearly all areas of the supply system, but is not conducted in the official economic statistics in particular the industry classification as a distinct group.
In short: Medical technology is difficult to collect and assess - and even harder in its development to predict.
Just a reliable forecast, funded by a stable data, is an important prerequisite to be able to develop future-proof innovations. It is also of crucial importance in the selection of research topics in science, in the strategic enterprise management or in assessing the prospects in health care up to descision-making in research and economic policy.
