Due to its complexity, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is difficult to diagnose with interdisciplinary data;however, early and comprehensive diagnosis is essential for treatment due to the high mortality. A manual overview and clinical evaluation of the still unclear and so far non-standardised data, which is partly hidden in doctors' letters, is difficult to achieve in everyday care.
For this reason, the Science Management Departement, together with its partners Biomax Informatics AG and the Clinic for Cardiology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen, will collaborate on the development of digital diagnostic support for HFpEF using artificial intelligence and the future-oriented terminology standard SNOMED CT, in order to simplify and improve the diagnosis.
This BMBF project is currently in the final application phase and is expected to start in summer 2021 with a duration of three years.

Among more than 500 proposals from all over Germany, we were selected as one of the best 100 ideas for the future of the education, science and innovation system in Germany.
The aim of our idea is to supplement conventional technology-driven innovation development in medical technology with a second development path that is consistently demand-driven and relies on artificial intelligence at key points. In this way, the innovation process is accelerated and driven forward in line with the intended clinical use.

mi-mappa: Mapping Patents for Biomedical Innovation
Complex innovations in medical engineering are hardly possible without interdisciplinary collaboration. However, the assembly of suitable experts is usually left to the initiating innovators themselves or fortuity. To tackle this problem a new integrative competence model of medical engineering based to be used with data mining algorithms has been conceptualized by the Department of Science Management.
It identifies suitable actors based on published texts for a given project by matching experts from medical, technological and product-related fields to the project.
Specifically, the product-related dimension of the approach faces the problem of the correct assignment of patents and the corresponding inventors to designated competence fields in medical engineering.
In the mi-Mappa project we try to tackle this challenge by two different but complementary ways:
- on the one hand a relation between information from medical products and patents is searched for, because medical products are easily assignable to competence fields and hence, the related patents are assignable to competence fields,
- on the other hand, we try to find publications of the patent innovators related to the project topics which are more easily assignable to competence fields than the patents themselves.
The project is based on technologies and knowledge from the fields of information retrieval, scientrometrics, ontology modelling and matching, data and text mining, automated classification and data cleaning.

In 2008 Dr. Farkas was already involved in the development of the first edition of trend- and innovation monitoring, in short TIM, for the medical industry in North Rhine-Westphalia.
There was a parameter and indicator framework, by which the current state of medical innovation activity in North Rhine-Westphalia could be recorded and compared with other federal states.
The first demonstration report enabled the positioning and comparison of federal states: North Rhine-Westphalia was under the TOP 3. This 2008 data is updated and revised for the second time.
Thus, a “real“ monitoring in the sense of a historical observation of the situation in the country will be presented for the first time.

Cluster Development, completed
Central starting point of the new Aachen Cluster ‘in.nrw’ was the personalization of medical technology.
Specialized consortia developed innovative systems and solutions for cardiovascular therapy.
The individual adaptation of medical devices and systems to the pathological needs of patients have been implemented in seven R&D projects, which all addressed cardiovascular therapy.
Thus, the Medical Technology Cluster Aachen not only focused on a very relevant medical indication, but also used the outstanding potential of the region.

Comparing Regional Profiles of the Medical Device Sector in NRW, completed
Apart from very few exceptions, the large medical technology companies, the global players, do not have their headquarters in North Rhine-Westphalia. On the other hand, different regions in NRW can refer, for example, on numerous research and development activities that are often conducted in cooperation with local businesses. The question remains: To which extend is North Rhine-Westphalia now profiled in medical technology?
In the sense of a specific supplement, the study “Innovation parameters of small and diversifying enterprises in regional comparison“ (original German: “Innovationsparameter von Klein- und Diversifizierungsunternehmen im regionalen Vergleich“) identified and characterized those medical-technically-oriented economic operators, that fall through the grid of official statistics, because they are too small or classified predominantly in a non-medical-technical industry, for example plastics processing. Thus, for the first time it is possible to quantify this previously “hidden“ posts and to make them manageable for more cooperations in R&D and for the entrepreneurship.
Under the association AGMT.NRW, Arbeitsgemeinschaft Medizintechnik NRW, the following regions are working together: South Westphalia, Aachen, Cologne-Bonn, Bochum/Ruhr and East Westphalia-Lippe. They conducted surveys with the local investment promotion agencies, industry initiatives and chambers in the local business community. The scientific conception and coordination was managed by AME-SCM in cooperation with the Aachener Kompetenzzentrum Medizintechnik AKM .
