Individualized Rehabilitation Therapy, Robot Assisted (inRehaRob)
Patients who suffered a stroke frequently develop movement disorders. Often it is no longer possible for such patients to independently perform simple daily activities. Subsequent therapy options are lengthy, cost and supervision intensive.
Solutions, regarding the problems broached could be offered by self-adaptive, robotic assistant systems. These systems orient themselves to the actual needs of the patient. They allow an autonomous, repetitive practice of the daily activities and thus contribute to the efficiency and consolidation of a therapy option. On the basis of the neuroplasticity of the brain, such systems could contribute to patients regaining lost motor skills.
In our solution, the robotic arm leads the forearm of the patients while movements in the other joints of the arm are independently controlled by the patients. To evaluate the quality of the movement performed and muscular activation in the upper extremity additional sensors will be utilized. On the basis of this evaluation the robot will independently adapt the movement task to the needs of the patient.
