Despite the undisputed successes of pediatric cardiac surgery, pediatric cardiac techniques and pediatric intensive care medicine, there is still a relevant early mortality for complex heart defects. A type congenital heart defect is the hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), in which the left side of the heart of the newborn is critically underdeveloped. The Optimize project aims to develop an innovative implant for the treatment of HLHS. The establishment of the pioneering technology for the pre-clinical implant development within this project is expected to constitute a step forward to improve the prognosis of children suffering such congenital disease in the future.
